Chapter Seventeen

I sleep fitfully for a few hours, killing time until morning. Desperate as I am to find Tarran Baggash and stop what might prove to be the mother of all storms from hitting southern California, I don’t have it in me to awaken an old lady in the middle of the night and demand answers.

Plus, I’m not really the demanding type. Of course, without the use of mind control, I do have to work an interrogation with a little extra finesse.

Admittedly, thinking she might be hiding out at her great-great-granddaughter’s house is a bit of stretch... unless the elderly relative knows her secret; if so, the home might prove to be a safe haven of sorts, if only for a little while. Still, it doesn’t explain how Jack lost his connection to her.

Worth a shot. After all, there has to be a reason why she returned to Orange County.

Plus, I have nothing else to go on.

The early morning sun just breaks over the Orange foothills. I have a coffee in hand, and a scone that, surprisingly, is moist and delicious. Obviously, someone screwed up at Starbucks. The address leads me along Chapman Ave and higher into the hills.

I drive past the Orange County Mining Company Restaurant—which overlooks most of Orange County—the site where Danny proposed to me. Well, near where he proposed to me. I’ll explain. One evening, out of the blue, Danny insisted we go out to dinner. He rushed me to get dressed, with a wild look in his eye. Yes, I suspected the goofy bastard was going to propose, so I played along. What I didn’t know was the proposal was last minute. The big dork assumed there would be tables available. There weren’t any; besides they require a reservation. We drove all the way up a winding, narrow road... only to be turned away (I even saw Danny try to offer the maître d’ some cash). We were young and stupid and fresh out of college; meaning, Danny botched the small bribe.

Danny, hell-bent, pulled over along the narrow road and led me out of the passenger’s side door. With a beautiful view of twinkling Orange County below, he dropped to a knee and proposed right there. It was sweet and kinda-sorta romantic. I mean... had I wished he’d waited a few more days and actually planned this a little better? Sure. Maybe. I mean, it was super sweet. He tried so hard to make the night special.

I absently reach for the wedding ring that isn’t there, surprised at just how automatic the reflex still is even after all these years. Danny had saved up and bought me a one-third carat ‘centillion cut’ ring. Meaning, it had one hundred sides. If anything, it did seem to bedazzle more than most rings of the same size.

Meanwhile, my Waze app leads me to a house on the very top of the tallest hill. Whoa—what a view! Curiously, the Spanish-style house isn’t very big, perhaps even smaller than my own, though it sports a big pool in the backyard.
